Serena Williams, left, of the United States, shares a light moment with Jelena Jankovic, of Serbia, after Williams won the women's finals championship match at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008.

On the very first point of the match, Serena Williams hit a backhand so hard that her earring flew off. Turns out she was just getting warmed up. Williams kept pounding away, her shots and shouts getting louder with every stroke. And when she finished off Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 Sunday night for the U.S.

Dudley Hart chips onto the 17th green during the final round of the BMW Championship golf tournament Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in St. Louis. Hart finished in second place, two strokes behind Camilo Villegas.

The final putt was the easiest one Camilo Villegas faced on the back nine of Bellerive, and when he rapped in the 2-foot par, he straightened his back, closed his eyes and tilted his head to the blue sky above. His wire-to-wire victory in the BMW Championship seemed overdue, even though the 26-year-old Colombian is finishing up his third year on the PGA Tour.

The glow from Don Haskins' greatest triumph was mostly a memory when Disney decided to take another look. "Don got more out of his teams and players than any coach who has ever coached college basketball," Knight said.

Carl Edwards stands next to the trophy after winning the Emerson Radio 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series auto race at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va., Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008.

This was supposed to be Kyle Busch's runaway championship. Then Carl Edwards turned up the heat.

Philadelphia Phillies' Jimmy Rollins leaves the field after making the last out of a 6-3 Mets win in the second game of a baseball double-header Sunday night, Sept. 7, 2008, at Shea Stadium in New York.

The Mets want this September to end much better than the last one. Carlos Delgado and Johan Santana give them two big reasons to believe it will. Delgado hit two long homers and drove in four runs, backing a huge win by Santana as New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Sunday night for a doubleheader split.
